Shaker Card vs. Mixed Media Card for Tonic Studios

Hey, everyone! It's Maria from Cardbomb here to share two totally different cards made from the same layout. In fact, not only did I use the same layout but I even used the same die. One of my favorite things about Tonic Studios is the diverse range of products they carry. Whether you want gorgeous paper, pens, pencils, watercolors, alcohol markers, mousses, drops, embellishments, etc. Tonic Studios has it! Today I've decided to share how you can make your cards dramatically different just by switching out your papers and art mediums.

CARD #1: MERMAID SHAKER CARD

For my first card I decided to do a clean and simple shaker card...

maria willis, #cardbomb, #card, #cards, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #art, #diy, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #mermaid, #diecutting, #shaker card, #mixedmedia,

SHAKER CARD HOW TO:
  • Start with a piece of watercolor paper cut to 4.25" x 5.5"
  • Use Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens and a wet paint brush to watercolor the background
  • Cut the "Mermaid to Be Friends" die out of the watercolored background. You will use the background for this card. Save the die cut for card #2.
  • Then, put double sided adhesive sheet onto the back of a piece of glossy black cardstock. Cut the "Mermaid to Be Friends" die out of this piece too.
  • Cut a piece of Holo Waves Mirror Cardstock to fill the front of a white card base and adhere it. Set this aside.
  • Adhere a piece of clear acetate to the backside of your watercolored background.
  • Peel the backing off of your black, glossy die cut and fit it into the watercolored background and adhering it to the acetate.
  • Flip the watercolor background over and add foam adhesive. Make sure that it is not visible through the acetate window. Also make sure that you create a foam barrier around the die cut sentiment so that your sequins cannot fall out of the shaker.
  • Add as many sequins and embellishments as you want to in a pile in the center of the Holo Waves cardstock. Make sure to use thin embellishments like glitter and sequins so that they will slide easily in your shaker card.
  • Stick the watercolored piece onto the card base trapping the embellishments behind the acetate window and within the foam adhesive barrier you created earlier.
  • Splatter the front of the card with Glitter Gloss sparkle!
  • Embellish with Dream Drops in Cloud 9
  • Shake the card and smile!

CARD #2: MIXED MEDIA MERMAID CARD

For my second card I decided to go for a completely different look. I used Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens, Embellishment Mousse, Expanding Mousse and Nuvo Drops to get a tarnished, under the sea, mixed media look...

maria willis, #cardbomb, #card, #cards, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #art, #diy, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #mermaid, #diecutting, #shaker card, #mixedmedia,

MIXED MEDIA CARD HOW TO:

  • Cut a piece of watercolor paper to 4.25" x 5.5"
  • Watercolor wash the background using Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens and a wet paintbrush.
  • Using a dry paint brush, brush some Nuvo Embellishment Mousse over the watercolor background. This will add color, texture and a sparkly sheen.
  • Grab a palette knife and use it to smear some Nuvo Expanding Mousse onto the background. Heat the mousse with a heat tool until it expands.
  • After you've gone crazy with your mousses on top of the watercolor background grab the leftover sentiment die from the first card. Add mousse and texture as you like.
  • It's important that the die will stand out on the background so add extra color using the Aqua Flow Pens if needed.
  • Cut two more "Mermaid to Be Friends" pieces out of black cardstock. Adhere these pieces together adding the colorful one on top.
  • Glue the tripled up die cut to the front of the card.
  • Splatter the card with Midas Touch Aqua Flow Pen.
  • Embellish the card with Nuvo Drops in Dirty Bronze and Mustard Gold.

HOT TIPS FOR USING NUVO MOUSSES:

  • HOT TIP #1: The more Expanding Mousse that you add (I am referring to thickness), the more the product will expand and give you incredible texture as you heat it. Thinly applied Expanding Mousse will not give you the same result.
  • HOT TIP #2: As the Expanding Mousse reacts to heat it will lose its sheen and have a more matte finish. This provides a wonderful contrast between the Expanding Mousse and the shinier Embellishment Mousse.
  • HOT TIP #3: You can brush either Embellishment or Expanding Mousse over the top of the heated Embellishment Mousse. This will not just add color but will add sheen as well.

Cardmaking with Hexagon Dies and Tonic Nuvo Shimmer Powders

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #cards, #art, #watercolor, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #color, #diecutting, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #hexagon,

Hey everybody! I'm so happy to be here today sharing a fun way to use your dies and art supplies as the focal point of your cards. Although, I chose to use hexagons for my cards, you can use any shape that you like. I started out with a large piece of watercolor paper. Then, I used my Nuvo Shimmer Powders and Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens to watercolor the entire paper. After that, I used a stencil and Nuvo Expanding Mousse to add texture on top of the color.

 Card #1: Blues & Purples

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #cards, #art, #watercolor, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #color, #diecutting, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #hexagon,
In the picture below you can see the embossing mousse and how much texture it adds. You can use it both with, and without, a stencil for different looks.

Next, I used my Hexagon dies to cut out as many hexagons as I could. Each hexagon was beautiful in a unique way. This shimmery one below was one of my favorites. Because of that, I popped it up on foam adhesive and made it the focal point of my first card.

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #cards, #art, #watercolor, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #color, #diecutting, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #hexagon,
After filling my card with hexagons I cut off any over hanging edges. Next, I added a die cut, "hooray," sentiment. That gold foil really pops off of the black cardstock.

Card #2: Pinks & Yellows

For my first card I paired blues, purples and even some greens together. However, for the second card I wanted a different color scheme. So, I went with pinks and yellows. The black background provides a great contrast for the brightly colored hexagons. After adhering the hexagons I decided to fill in some of the black space by drawing with a gel pen. I liked the way it looked. Therefore, I decided to do the same thing on my first card.

It was difficult to capture how shimmery these cards are in my pictures. Here's a close up that shows the sparkle from the Shimmer Powders.

This picture (below) shows smooth watercoloring (Aqua Flow Pens). On top of that you can see both Embellishment and Expanding Mousses.

The sentiment was heat embossed in white on black cardstock. Then, it was popped up on foam adhesive for dimension.

Overall, I'm really happy with the way these cards came out. I had fun making a mess with my watercolor supplies. Then, I got to puzzle piece it all together to make the finished card. I enjoyed the whole process.

How to make these cards:

  • Watercolor a big sheet of paper with both Shimmer Powders and Aqua Flow Pens.
  • Add texture with Embellishment and Expanding Mousse. Stencils are optional.
  • Use Hexagon dies to cut out shapes from the decorated paper.
  • Adhere the hexagons to your card using liquid and foam adhesive.
  • Add details with a gel pen.
  • Die cut or heat emboss a sentiment.
  • Embellish your card with sequins or Nuvo Drops.

So, I hope you will hop along with us, get inspired to create with this new set, and enter to win some fabulous prizes (prize info at bottom of post).

For my card I decided to go for a mixed media look and I had a ton of fun coming up with this. I started out by blending my background in shades of blue with my Distress Oxide inks. I left the center lighter so that my flower would stand out a bit more. Then I used embossing paste and the Aztec Motif stencil to add some texture to the background. I used one of the detail stamps from the leaves to stamp in black around the edges. Then I splattered the heck out of the whole background and added some bronze Nuvo drops for good measure.

The flower and leaves were colored by ink smooshing them with Distress Oxide inks in reds and greens. After the flower dried I stamped the detail in with black ink (I only used one of the detail stamps). This set doesn't have a stem so I made my own. I just used the same color greens that I did for the leaves on a piece of white cardstock. Then I cut a long strip out with scissors. After that I added details to all of the flower pieces with a black sharpie and a white gel pen.

I heat embossed the sentiment in white onto black cardstock. Next, I cut it all out and popped it up on my card using foam adhesive for dimension. The flower and parts of the leaves are popped up as well.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! If you'd like a chance to win a $15 gift certificate from Altenew all you need to do is leave a comment below. More info about prizes can be found below along with links to the products I've used today.

Mixing Stamp Sets to Get More Out of Them

Hi everybody! I'm here today with a post on mixing and matching stamps from different sets so you can get more out of them. For today's card I mixed two unlikely stamp sets to make a sweet card with a message of support. I used a floral spray stamp from the Magnificent Magnolia set. Then, I found a flower and a sentiment from the Sammy Takes It Easy set.

I used my stamping platform to stamp the floral spray repeatedly onto my card front. Powdered Peach  and Lotus Flower inks blended together beautifully to give this stamp a soft look. Next, I blended the background with Mint Macaroon to make it look like a sky. After that I stamped the flower multiple times in Black Shadow ink and watercolored them with Nuvo Shimmer Powders. I cut them out and popped them up on the card with foam adhesive.

After stamping the sentiment in Black Shadow ink I adhered the card face to some gray cardstock foam adhesive because I wanted to add extra dimension to my card. Then, I added Silver Rain sequins and Nuvo Dream Drops in Fairy Wings to finish the card off. Now I'm curious to know how often you find yourself looking for different ways to use or combine your stamp sets? Do you tend to use them as intended? Or, are you a rebel who likes to mix and match? I'd love to hear from you in the comments below!

Have an amazing day you all! See you back here soon!

Watercoloring with Nuvo Shimmer Powders on Black Cardstock

Hey Everybody! It's Maria (Cardbomb) here today with a fun way to use your Nuvo Shimmer Powders. I love using my Shimmer Powders to watercolor and wanted to share how I used them to watercolor on black cardstock. They look so metallic and vibrant against the black that you can achieve quite a different look than you do on white cardstock. I've made a video tutorial sharing how to do this so be sure to check that out if you are interested (the video is at the bottom of the post).
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #nuvo, #nuvoshimmerpowder, watercolor, #card, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #handmadecards, #diy, #greetingcards, #color, #technique, #video, #videotutorial,

I started out by heat embossing the sentiment from Little Something for Harry in white, then masking the sentiment off using a post it note that I cut out with my rectangle dies. Then, using my stamping platform and this gorgeous floral stamp from the Dainty Daisies set I repeatedly stamped the flower in Clear Mark ink and heat embossed the images in Clear Embossing Powder. After that I put little puffs of Shimmer Powder onto the surface of my work space. I added drops of rubbing alcohol/surgical spirits to the powder and mixed until it was a consistency that I could paint with. I started out using a brush with a thicker tip and quickly decided to switch to a number 2 round brush so that I could easily stay within the lines.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #nuvo, #nuvoshimmerpowder, watercolor, #card, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #handmadecards, #diy, #greetingcards, #color, #technique, #video, #videotutorial,

After I finished watercoloring the floral images I used a white gel pen to outline the rectangle defining the sentiment. In hindsight I realize that it would've been much easier to stamp the sentiment onto a rectangle die cut and pop it up as it would've allowed me to be a bit less careful when I embossed the images. Anyhow, that's something for me to try next time. Then I used some white acrylic paint, and the leftover shimmer powders to splatter the background. I added Nuvo Crystal Drops in Neptune Turquoise to finish it off and mounted the card front onto some gorgeous Pearlescent Card from the Craft Perfect line (Fresh Mint). This cardstock is textured and shimmery and was the perfect compliment to the card front. After that I mounted the whole thing onto a black card base using foam adhesive to give the card a bit of dimension.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #nuvo, #nuvoshimmerpowder, watercolor, #card, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #handmadecards, #diy, #greetingcards, #color, #technique, #video, #videotutorial,

Here's that video I promised you...

Well, that's it for today you guys! It's late and I am wicked tired so I'm heading off to bed. I'm adding product links below in case you are interested in checking out anything that I've used for today's project. Copic Coloring with Waffle Flowers Gorgeous Magnolia

Hi everybody! I hope you had a great weekend filled with relaxation and crafty time. I spent most of my weekend sifting through our house and packing boxes as we are getting ready to move. Moving is a lot of work but it feels so good to purge and get rid of things that we don't need. That being said, I am looking forward to when I can spend my free time getting crafty again!

I bought this Magnolia stamp from Waffle Flower quite some time ago and hadn't had time to have fun with it. I finally busted it out along with my copics for some coloring.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #waffleflowercrafts, #magnolia, #flowers, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #color, #copics, #copicmarkers, #distressoxides, #timholtz, #tonicstudios, #simonsaysstamp,

First, I'm going to have to apologize because I can't tell you exactly which color markers I used for this. Since we are moving I am making a huge effort to keep organized and put things away. Unfortunately, I put the markers that I used away before I could make note of which ones they were. I can tell you that I used a mix of V's, B's, BG's, and R's for the flowers... I love mixing unexpected color combos to see if I can get them to blend well.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #waffleflowercrafts, #magnolia, #flowers, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #color, #copics, #copicmarkers, #distressoxides, #timholtz, #tonicstudios, #simonsaysstamp,

After coloring the flowers and leaves I used the coordinating dies to cut them out and adhere them to my card base which was blended with Distress Oxides. I popped some of them up on foam adhesive to give the card more dimension. I also popped the sentiment up on foam tape.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #waffleflowercrafts, #magnolia, #flowers, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #color, #copics, #copicmarkers, #distressoxides, #timholtz, #tonicstudios, #simonsaysstamp,

To finish my card off and give it some sparkle I used my Glitter Gloss pen from Tonic Studios to color in the flower petals. You can just barely see the sparkle in the picture below but in real life the shimmer is fantastic. I also added some sequins from Simon Says Stamp (Moonshine) to give it a little bit more magic.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #waffleflowercrafts, #magnolia, #flowers, #card, #handmade, #handmadecards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #papercraft, #color, #copics, #copicmarkers, #distressoxides, #timholtz, #tonicstudios, #simonsaysstamp,

That's it for today you guys! It's late here in California and I've got to get to work in the morning so I'm off to bed now. I hope you all have a fantastic day and I'll be back here soon with another card. Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Sammy the Sloth Takes a Nap

Hello Everybody! It's Maria here today and I am so excited to be sharing this card today because the Adorable collection was released yesterday in the UK! This collection of stamps is full of "adorable" critters and for today's card I've used Sammy Takes It Easy. This set has three different sloth images, leaves, vines and flowers and quite a few great sentiments. I love this sleepy sloth and decided to use him for my card. I started out by stamping him onto watercolor paper. Then I used a Sharpie marker to extend the tree branch so that it reached across the whole card. Then, I cut along the top of the sloth and along the branch so that I could pop the sloth up on my card. Next I stamped the hanging vines onto the tree branch. I also stamped some extra leaves and flowers so that I could color those in as well.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, Sammy Takes It Easy, #nuvo, aqua flow pens, #watercolor, sloth, art, #handmadecards, #handmade, #color, diy, #card, #stamp, #ink, #paper,

I used my Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens and a paint brush to watercolor all of my images. I'll list the colors at the bottom of the post for you. I cut out all of my images by hand but if you are in the UK you can purchase the coordinating dies for this set. After cutting out my leaves and flowers I decided how I wanted them to fit behind the sloth and then adhered them in the right place. I adhered the card front by popping it up on foam adhesive to give it a bit of dimension.

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, Sammy Takes It Easy, #nuvo, aqua flow pens, #watercolor, sloth, art, #handmadecards, #handmade, #color, diy, #card, #stamp, #ink, #paper,

My background is watercolored using Nuvo Aqua Flow markers and you can't tell from the picture but it's actually very sparkly. I splattered the background with my Glitter Gloss pen and it's really shimmery in real life. The sentiment is stamped in Nuvo Hybrid Black Shadow Ink. I did have to stamp it multiple times to get a crisp sentiment because I was stamping on watercolor paper. Luckily, this was easy because I used my Tonic Stamp Positioner to do this. The final touch on my card was to add some highlights with a white gel pen.

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, Sammy Takes It Easy, #nuvo, aqua flow pens, #watercolor, sloth, art, #handmadecards, #handmade, #color, diy, #card, #stamp, #ink, #paper,

That is it for today you guys. It is nearly 3am here in California and I've got to get up soon to head off to work. I hope you all have an amazing day!

Watercoloring with Nuvo Shimmer Powder

Hello Everyone! It's Maria (Cardbomb) here today and I am so happy to be joining you for a little watercolor fun. For today's card I decided to use the Ellie Goes Nuts stamp set and some of my Nuvo Shimmer Powders.

#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #nuvoshimmerpowder, #elephants, #watercolor, #nuvodreamdrops, #elliegoesnuts, #art, #create, #craft, #diy, #handmade, #handmadecards

I used every elephant in the set and used my Stamp Platform and some basic masking to stack the elephants on top of each other. Then I used Nuvo Shimmer Powders (Cherry Bomb, Solar Flare, Falling Leaves and Blue Blitz) and a paint brush to watercolor them. To do this I puffed a little shimmer powder out onto my media mat and added a little bit of water to each color. Adding water to the shimmer powder turns it into a watercolor medium that is vibrant and full of shimmer.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #nuvoshimmerpowder, #elephants, #watercolor, #nuvodreamdrops, #elliegoesnuts, #art, #create, #craft, #diy, #handmade, #handmadecards

After watercoloring the elephants I cut them out and watercolored my background. I wanted the elephants to be the star of the show so on the background I used my Nuvo Aquaflow pens in Clear Water and Indigo Dawn so that the background wouldn't shimmer like the elephants do. I adhered my background onto black cardstock, then, I used foam adhesive to adhere the elephants onto the card base.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #nuvoshimmerpowder, #elephants, #watercolor, #nuvodreamdrops, #elliegoesnuts, #art, #create, #craft, #diy, #handmade, #handmadecards

After adding the elephants I heat embossed the sentiment and popped that up on foam adhesive as well. As an after thought, I decided that I wanted the background to have a little shimmer too. So, I covered the elephants with masks, and splattered some Solar Flare and Blue Blitz onto the background. You can see how magical it looks where it landed on the black cardstock. To finish my card off I added some Dream Drops in Indigo Eclipse.
#cardbomb, #mariawillis, #tonicstudios, #tonicstudiosusa, #cards, #stamp, #ink, #paper, #nuvoshimmerpowder, #elephants, #watercolor, #nuvodreamdrops, #elliegoesnuts, #art, #create, #craft, #diy, #handmade, #handmadecards

I hope today's card will inspire you to watercolor with Shimmer Powders. It's such an easy and fun way to use the powders to get a magical effect. That's it for today you all. Thanks so much for joining me and we will see you back here tomorrow with another fantastic project from Design Team member Zinia.

Have a wonderful day!
Maria
