Sparkly Background and Christmas Magic with Tonic Studios

Hey everybody! I'm swinging by to share a quick and easy card with you today. I've been busy lately. I'm talking getting four hours of sleep a night for a little too long, kind of busy. So, when I sat down to make this card I knew that I needed to be quick, and so, I decided to stencil a fun background and put a brightly colored Christmas cutie in front of it.

  • I ink blended using Laguna Bay and Siren Blue inks.
  • If you need a circle stencil you can create one using your Tonic Circle Dies.
  • Next I used the Winter Wonderland Stencil and Moonstone Glimmer Paste over the ink.
  • I love that the Moonstone paste picks up the color of the ink below.

  • I colored the reindeer from Celebrate Success with my Nuvo Alcohol Markers.
  • Next, I gave him a holiday sweater from the recent free downloadable stamp set.
  • I popped the reindeer up on top of the heat embossed sentiment and adhered it with foam adhesive.
  • I added sequins, a blue card base, and called it a night!

Now, on to my projects! This first thing I've made is not a card... When I saw the stamp release I immediately knew that I had to use the deer from the Garden Party release with the new, FREE printable stamp set called, Christmas Outfits. I paired those up with the mug from Jolly Marshmallow Snowman to make a scene for some hot tubbing reindeer... and yes, of course they are skinny dipping!

I colored the deer, mug, outfits and trees with my Nuvo Alcohol Markers.The sky in the background was watercolored with Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens and then splattered with Glitter Gloss. The snowy, purple ground is watercolored with Lilac Waterfall Nuvo Shimmer Powders.

Now, my favorite part of this first project was using this scene to create a funny little video. It's short and funny. I hope you'll like it.

I started out with a watercolor wash on my background (Nuvo Aqua Flows). Then I splattered it with Glitter Gloss. I love that it gives it some texture and also looks like shimmery snow. The marshmallow snowman is also watercolored with Nuvo Aqua Flows.

The Christmas tree was colored with three colors of Nuvo Alcohol markers. I am planning to share a video on this soon as I've had some requests asking how to best color with the Nuvo markers. I made a frame for the background using my rectangle dies and I think that scalloped edge is a nice detail.

My last card is a little bit more subtle but it's still really sweet. I did a watercolor wash with my Aqua Flow pens on some watercolor paper. Then I applied some glimmer paste in Moonstone over the Snowflake stencil. It looks so beautiful and sparkly in real life. Then I used the reindeer from Celebrate Success along with a sweater from Christmas Outfits to make a cute, little Christmas reindeer.

The sweater and gift are colored with Nuvo Alcohol Markers. The reindeer stamp has arms that stick up in the air. Check out my first project again to see what the original arms look like. I really wanted the deer to wear a different outfit and it was so easy to make it happen. I just cut his cute little arms right off and put the sweater on his stubby little torso. Voila! He has arms again!

The cool thing about this Christmas outfit stamp set is that you can make the outfits work with the animals from all three of the critter sets from the last release. That means you've got a whole farm load of animals to dress up in holiday attire.

I used my rectangle dies again to cut out a sparkly piece of snowflake background. I added that to my ink blended card base and put the reindeer on top. He's popped up on foam adhesive. The sentiment was stamped in Tonic's Nuvo Black Shadow ink. This is one of my favorite inks because of how useful it is. It works with both watercolor and alcohol inks so you can use jus the one ink and never worry about your project smearing. To finish the project off I added some red confetti glitter using my Nuvo Precision Glue Pen.

Coloring Peony Blooms With Nuvo Aqua Flows and Pencils

Hi Everybody! I am so glad to have you join me today. I was in a big hurry to get my card done today as I was quite at the last minute. I've been really busy this week because I've been getting ready for a big event at the new Tonic Studios USA warehouse this coming weekend. I'm really excited about it and I'm looking forward to telling you all about it an upcoming post.

Since I was in a hurry it was lucky that I had these beautiful, watercolored Peonies left over from another card! I used my Blue Blitz Shimmer Powder to wash a light background over my card face. Then I splattered the background with Violet Brocade shimmer powder.

I placed the blooms and foliage on the card front and adhered some of it flat, and, some of it with foam adhesive. Have you noticed that some of the leaves are much darker than the others? They're also embossed in white too. That's because those are actually colored with the Nuvo Watercolor Pencils on black cardstock! I love the dramatic look of the darker leaves.

To finish off the card I stamped a sentiment from Celebrate Sentiments and popped it up. Then I added some sequins in Silver Rain to bling the card out a little. That was it for today's card-quick and easy since I had colored my florals ahead of time.

Watercoloring with Nuvo Aquaflow Pens and a Gatefold Card

Hi everybody! Thanks for joining me here today. I'm excited to share something with you that's a little bit outside of what I normally make. It's a Gate Fold Card! Gate Fold cards have two front flaps that open forwards like two doors of a gate. This card is the same size as a normal A2 sized card but it's fun twist to have it open differently than a standard card. Guess what? I've got a video tutorial for you today-here it is...



I started out by heat embossing this gorgeous floral stamp from the Botanical Blooms set two times in gold onto watercolor paper. I needed two because I wanted to place one on each side of the card front.

Then, I used Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens in a variety of colors to watercolor both of my images. I did this by squeezing a little bit of ink from my pens onto my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat. Then I used a water brush to pick up the color and add it to my images.

HERE'S A LIST OF THE NUVO AQUA FLOW COLORS THAT I USED:

  • Leaves: Sliced Kiwi, Empress Teal, Tomato Juice, True Turquoise and Azure Blue
  • Bulbs & Cattails: Mango Mimosa, Tomato Juice, Rustic Oak, Caramel Pecan
  • Flowers: Hawaiian Orchid, Indigo Dawn and Aqua Splash

I decided that I wanted the front of my card to be super sparkly so I painted the front panels with Glacier Paste in Quiksilver. This paste is so cool! It goes on really smooth and doesn't have texture like the Embellishment and Expanding Pastes do. It dries quickly with a silky, smooth, sparkly finish. I added some splatters of white acrylic paint for a little more detail on the background.

I heat embossed a banner with my sentiment inside and cut it out (I also cut out the floral images).

Using foam adhesive I adhered the floral images to each panel on my card front. The flowers interlock perfectly helping to keep the card closed.

Last of all I used foam tape to add the banner to the left side of the front of my card. When you do this it's really important to make sure that you only use adhesive on one side of the banner. If you adhere the banner to both sides of the card you will seal your card shut.

The last helpful bit of information that I have for you is the size of the card base. It measures 5.5" tall, 8.5" wide and it is scored 2 1/8" from either side to create the front flaps. If this sounds confusing please do watch the video as I share the blank card base there.

Tonic Studios Flora Background colored with Nuvo Alcohol Markers

Hello everybody! Today I am sharing some fun coloring with Nuvo Alcohol Markers. These markers come in sets of three which make it really easy to pick some great coloring combos. Personally, I love mixing and matching my own color combinations to try to achieve a dramatic look with my coloring.

I started off by stamping the Flora Background stamp onto Craft Perfect Smooth White cardstock with Black Shadow Ink. This ink allows you to either watercolor or use alcohol inks without the risk of your stamped image smearing. This paper is one of my favorite papers for coloring with alcohol inks as it absorbs the ink and allows the colors to blend smoothly.

Next I colored in my image with a variety of Nuvo Alcohol Markers from five different sets. Here are the colors that I used:
  • Flowers: 373,374,375, 379
  • Leaves: 410, 412, 416, 417
  • Background: 360, 363
I colored one petal/leaf at a time starting with the lightest color. Then I added shading in getting progressively darker as I went along. I went back over my coloring again with the lighter colors to make sure my colors were smoothly blended.

When my whole image was colored I cut it out and adhered it my black card base with foam tape. I added a heat embossed sentiment from Celebrate Sentiments and popped that up too. To finish my card off I added Nuvo Crystal Drops in Metallic-Mustard Gold.

Coloring with Nuvo Watercolor Pencils and Shimmer Powders

I started by stamping this gorgeous background stamp onto Craft Perfect Ultra Smooth Cardstock with Black Shadow ink. This is my go to ink because it's a hybrid ink that works with both water and alcohol based medium. I painted the first layer of this card with Nuvo Shimmer Powders. Then I layered colored pencils on top of the shimmer powders to add texture and shading.

These colored pencils are actually watercolor pencils but you can use them dry for a beautiful affect as well.

After I finished coloring I used my Glitter Gloss Aquaflow Pen to add clear glitter to all of the flowers.You can see the glimmer catching the light on the photo below.

After adding my heat embossed sentiment I embellished my card with Dream Drops in Indigo Eclipse. Then I mounted it onto a black card base with foam tape for some extra dimension.

Tonic Studios Garden Party Release Blog Hop Day 2 + Giveaways + 15% Off!

Hello, you guys! Today is such an exciting day because it is day two of the Tonic Studios Garden Party Release Blog Hop (View Day One of the hop Here)! If you haven't heard yet, Tonic has just released eight new stamp sets that are absolutely fantastic. PEONY BLOOM & CELEBRATE SENTIMENTS

For my first card I decided to use the gorgous Peony Bloom stamp set. I heat embossed it in silver on watercolor cardstock.

Then I used my Nuvo Aquaflow Pens and a paint brush to watercolor the floral images and leaves. I love the combination of blues and pinks (which can make the most stunning purples) so that's what I decided to do here. I added some yellows and oranges to the center of the flower and a light shade of yellow to the tips of the petals. After my watercoloring dried I fussy cut it out and adhered it with foam adhesive to a black background that had been brushed and splattered with Pure Platinum Embellishment Mousse. The camera didn't pick up the sheen but the background of this card has a nice, subtle shimmer to it. I heat embossed the sentiment in white. Seriously, this sentiment is one of the nicest things you can say to somebody and I love it!

To finish the card off I added some gorgeous Dream Drops in Indigo Eclipse. These drops dried with a pearlescent, purplish hue and were the perfect final touch for this card.

CELEBRATE FRIENDSHIP & CELEBRATE SENTIMENTS

For my second card I wanted to showcase some of the adorable new critter stamps. All of the stamps on this card (except for the sentiment) come from the Celebrate Friendship set. This is just one of three new stamp sets that feature fun animals. These sets coordinate and the sizes are matched perfectly which means you can mix and match the sets and swap all of the outfits around between the animals! These sets are also fantastic for scene building!

I started this card by using my Tonic Stamping Platform and some masking paper to build my scene.  I used the Nuvo Black Shadow ink as it's safe to use with alchohol markers. It works well with watercolors as well so if you're looking for a great hybrid ink-this is it! I used my Nuvo Alcohol Markers (and a few Nuvo pencils) to color my card. The cow is so cute in her purple heart dress! But, there are so many clothes to choose from that I could easily have made this cow a boy too.

After coloring my card I put it back into my stamping platform and used it get my sentiment lined up straight. I stamped it in the Black Shadow ink and that finished off my card.
