Mixed Media Background Using Just One Stencil!

Hi everybody! I hope you're having an awesome day! I've got a fun mixed media card to share with you today and I made the background using just one stencil and some sprays, inks and gloss medium.

I started out by spraying the Art Deco Arches Stencil from Hero Arts with Dina Wakley Gloss Spray in Eggplant. I then layed my sprayed stencil onto a piece of white cardstock and pressed down over it with a paper towel. Some of the purple ink stuck to my cardstock leaving a purple ghosted image of the stencil. This gloss spray is acrylic paint and once it's dry it is permanent and will resist other mediums. After it was dry I sprayed over it with Distress Oxide Spray in Salvage Patina. I inkblended around that with Lemon Drop and Fruit Punch Reactive Inks. Then, I splattered the background with some white acrylic paint that I had watered down. The final step was to place my clean stencil back on the background. I lined it up with the purple paint that was showing and applied a clear gloss medium (Liquitex) over the top. I didn't cover the entire background but applied the gloss coat randomly. This trapped some of the layers I had already applied behind the gloss layer and added cool texture and sheen. This is hard to see in the photographs but I have a quick video clip at the end of my post to show you.

After making my background I thought that the stenciled arches looked a little bit like fish scales or waves so I decided to go with an ocean theme. I added die cut elements from the Hero Lifestyle Mermaid and Seashells Fancy Dies to the card after coloring them in matching colors. I layered them on top of a shredded piece of burlap using glue dots and foam tape.

I heat embossed my sentiment from the Sea You Soon stamp set by stamping first in Sapphire Pigment Ink and then heat embossing that with Clear Embossing Powder. This is such an awesome way to heat emboss in color because there is basically no risk of making a mess. After heat embossing my sentiment I inkblended it using Lemon Drop Reactive so that it would pop off of my card.

The last thing I did was to splatter my mermaid tail using blue (copic marker) and then the whole card using Gold Metallic Ink.

It's hard to see all of the background details in the pictures I took so here is a quick video clip for you to get a better look...

Ok, that's it for today you guys! I'm curious to know if you have used clear, gloss medium before? This was my first time using it and I loved it!

Have an awesome day! Bye for now!

Bam! Mixed Media Card with Whimsy Stamps!

Hi everybody! It's Maria and I'm thrilled to be back as a guest designer for Whimsy Stamps today. This card was so much fun to make! I went a little bit mixed media style for this one and I always have a good time when I'm making a big old mess. I combined the BAM! You're Old stamp set with the Comic Half-Tone stencil to make this card. This stamp and stencil combo yields such a cool comic book vibe that I really love.

I started out by spraying my background (white Hammermill cardstock) with my Dina Wakley gloss sprays in Lemon and Turquoise. These sprays dry quickly and leave you with a shiny finish so I like to make sure I use permanent ink/products when working on top of them. I ink-blended around the edges of my panel using Nuvo Siren Blue hybrid ink and a blending brush. Then I used my Nuvo Black Shadow hybrid ink to ink-blend through the Comic Half-Tone stencil. I applied the ink more heavily around the edges of the card so that the inside would appear brighter and allow my images to pop.

I stamped the skyline stamp from the BAM! You're Old stamp set at the bottom of my card panel. My black ink was beading up a little bit on the glossy finish and I wasn't getting the dramatic contrast that I had hoped for. I decided to use the stamped image as a guide and painted right over the top of it using black acrylic paint. That left me with a pitch black skyline. I added the lights and other detail back in with a white posca pen. I also added little asterisks to the background with a white gel pen.

I stamped my images from the BAM! You're Old stamp set in copic friendly ink and colored them in with my copic markers (I'll add the colors at the bottom of my post). I grabbed a red copic marker that I had used to color my super hero and colored some white cardstock so that I would have a perfect color match for my sentiment strips. I used black pigment ink to stamp my sentiment and then heat embossed it in clear embossing powder. This is a great trick for getting flawless black heat embossing every time because it eliminates the need for black embossing powder.

To finish my card up I added my images and sentiments with foam tape and then adhered the whole thing to a black cardbase... and that was it!

I hope you've enjoyed learning a little bit about my process today and that you might feel inspired to go have some crafty fun of your own. A huge thanks to Whimsy Stamps for having me back as a guest again! That's it for today folks. As promised, I will list the copic colors that I've used below and I will also add links to all of the products that I've used today in case you're interested in checking any of those out.

Have an amazing day everybody!

Crafty Friends: Ellen Hutson and a Discount!

Hey everybody! I hope your week is off to a great start! I am excited because we are getting kittens today... well, they were supposed to be kittens but they are twelve weeks old now so I'm hoping there's a little kitten left in them. Either way, we've been waiting for these kitties since May and we are so excited to finally get them.

I'm also excited because today is the 20th of the month and that means I'm getting together with my crafty friends for an awesome blog hop! If you haven't joined us for this hop before... we are a group of crafty friends who believe in crafting for fun. Every month we pick one company to focus on and we bring you tons of creative inspiration using products from that company. This month we are sharing our love for Ellen Hutson! Ellen is so generous and has offered an exclusive discount for our readers.

DISCOUNT: Click this link to Ellen Hutson and use the code: CRAFTYFRIENDS for 20% off an all Essentials by Ellen products from now through July 21st, 2020.

For this card I went for sort of a clean, mixed media look (is that a thing?). I love doing mixed media and haven't had much time for it lately so this card hit the spot for me in terms of getting colorful and grungy. I used the Dina Wakley Gloss Sprays on deli paper to create the background for my card. When it was dry I adhered it to a piece of white cardstock using gel medium.

Next, I added the sentiment, "Mondo Squishy Hugs," which I just love from the High Five stamp set from Ellen Hutson. I stamped it in black Hybrid ink and heat embossed it in clear embossing powder.

Then I used the Painted Stripes stamp set to add some decorative elements and texture to my card. These were all heat embossed either in gold, clear with a sprinkling of gold, or, black.

To finish my card off I added detail with black and white glaze gel pens just to add a little more texture.

Both of the stamp sets that I used today qualify for the awesome 20% discount to Ellen Hutson! There are a ton of products (that I didn't use today) that qualify as well. So, If you're inclined to do a little shopping remember to to use this link to Ellen Hutson and add the code CRAFTYFRIENDS when you check out. Here are the details...
